“Madonna & Me” is ON TOUR! It is stressful and also kind-of fun!

Image

Oh my god, you guys. It’s been CRAZY. I’m on a book tour for Madonna & Me, my just-released anthology of essays about Madonna by women writers. (And, um, I’m willing to bet that if you’re reading this blog, you already know all about it.)

So far I (with an assortment of my brave fellow anthology contributors) have done readings outside Boston (at Newtonville Books), at Monmouth University’s gender-studies program on the Jersey Shore (!), at le Poisson Rouge in NYC, and at Barnes & Noble-Greenwich Village in NYC. All the events were pretty much superb. The Newtonville Books event kicked off the tour nicely — tons of people showed up (maybe 70?) — and it was standing-room only!  I hosted the event and introduced our four incredible contributors (Erin Trahan, Christine Bachman, Kelly Keenan Trumpbour, and Sarah Sweeney), who each read great renditions of their essays from Madonna & Me.

Off to Monmouth U. the next day!  There I read with contributors Jamia Wilson and Shawna Kenney. That event was fun, too — quite a bit smaller and more intimate than Newtonville, but it is always fun and strange to be around youthful and inspired college kids.

Yesterday I hit NYC and read at the Soundtrack Series, a super-fun monthly lit-reading series organized and hosted by spitfire/writer supreme Dana Rossi (she is also a contributor to Madonna & Me). The event was a specially themed “March Madness Madonnathon,” which was cool and appropriate. Dana and I read our Madonna-themed pieces, along with fellow contributors Jamie Beckman, Kristin McGonigle, and Gloria Feldt. It was packed and lively and New Yorky, a cool scene. We were interviewed for the NY1 TV station!  But I have no clue  what will come of that. Fingers crossed!  A few of my good friends showed up, too, which is always great.

Tonight the indomitable Susan Shapiro organized an amazing Madonna & Me charity reading at Barnes & Noble Greenwich Village. We had an awesome Madonna & Me window display and everything! Sooooo exciting! I read a shortened version of my uber-personal essay, along with essays from Sue Shapiro, Gloria Feldt, New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum, and Kelly Keenan Trumpbour. My agent also showed up and participated in a fun little Q&A with the rest of us. We had a pretty strong turnout (50 or so?), and it was less stressful than some of the other events because all of us speakers got to SIT AT A TABLE and read from there instead of standing awkwardly in front of a huge clunky podium.

I still have a bunch of readings to come (Philly, DC, SF, and LA), and I’ll keep you all abreast of those events as they pop up.

Check out the updated PRESS page at the Madonna & Me site — we’ve been getting a good bit of nice new press lately (um hello, The Atlantic!? Ms. magazine?!)

Until later… Thanks for reading!

‘Madonna & Me’ madness is starting in earnest

The Madonna & Me machine (um, that would be me) is in overdrive right now, because the book is coming out in just 2 weeks!  It’s already shipping from Amazon, so go ahead and order your copy NOW, dammit.

A few things to note… I will be reading my essay from Madonna & Me tonight at Literary Death Match in SF. If you’re in the Bay Area, you should come out!

And please check out Tara Hanks’ great review of Madonna & Me over at For Books’ Sake. We like.

Also, please RSVP for the upcoming NYC Madonna & Me reading on 3/22. It’s part of Soundtrack Series, an awesome monthly lit event where writers tell stories about their favorite songs.

You can also RSVP here for the DC reading at Busboys & Poets on 3/27.

“Madonna & Me” Tumblr, Super Bowl, Frisky article, etc.

Some of you already know this, but I recently launched a Tumblr for Madonna & Me. It’s for fun random stuff: Madonna photos, quotes, and news about the book (duh). We’ve also got some really bright, fun animated Madonna GIFs  made by my talented media-maven friend Marisa.  And the Tumblr is open for submissions,  so please feel free to submit your own Madonna-centric thoughts and stories!  Do it now! You know you want to!

In other news, I couldn’t possibly have been a bigger fan of Madonna’s half-time performance at the Super Bowl. You? It was so smooth and seamless — she looked incredible and her performance was pretty much flawless, IMHO. I didn’t understand all the nitpicky commentary out there, but I guess haters will always hate, yeah?  Now check out my piece for The Frisky about why Madge was a perfect Super Bowl pick!

And here’s yet another reminder: go and buy Madonna & Me pronto. It’s about to sell out on Amazon! And it’s shipping now, so if you order it today you will get it in the mail supersoon. EXCITE. More soon…

Madonna and Me is kind-of almost done!

I just turned in the first draft of Madonna and Me to my editor. SO EXCITED. I think it’s in good shape and hopefully she will love it as much as I do. It’s long!

That’s really all I want to say at the moment, so… more to come when I’m less exhausted.
