Hello 2013

Hi, friends!

Sorry for the long absence. Happy almost-February. Good things are happening over here. January has turned out to be an excellent month in terms of freelance assignments, and I think/hope it’s just a sign of the awesomeness to come in 2013. I’m working on some fun pieces for magazines I’ve always wanted to break into. Fingers crossed it’ll all go off without a hitch. Stay tuned for more details to come…

I’m also working on a proposal for a new book I want to write — I’m super-psyched about that prospective project, but want to keep mum on the details for now. Hopefully there will be news I can share around that, too, sometime in the not-too-distant future.

Other updates:

  • I’m moving back to NYC (Brooklyn, obvs) this spring! I left NY for SF back in 2005,  and though I love the Bay Area, it’s just really really… FAR. I.e. far from my roots and my family & friends. I feel ready to be back on the East Coast again, at least for a while; who knows where I’ll end up in the long run.
  • I wrote a piece for Cosmopolitan magazine that was supposed to come out this month, but was held (sad-face) for a future issue. I’ll let you know when it comes out.
  • My apocalyptic pop-culture book, The End: 50 Apocalyptic Visions From Pop Culture That You Should Know About…Before It’s Too Late, got nominated for a “Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers” by the American Library Association! Very cool.
  • I wrote this essay about my sugar addiction for The Fix. It got picked up by Salon, which always thrills me.
  • Back in August I wrote this piece about FOMO (“fear of missing out”) for TheFix. Then I wrote about sober friendships for them.
  • Wrote this piece about awesome female journalists for VitaminW.

That’s about it for now. More soon…

“Madonna & Me” update, etc. etc.

Oh hello!

It’s been an ultra-hectic month for me. I returned to San Francisco from the Madonna & Me tour (see pix here) and promptly lost my day job. So yeah — it’s been a bit of a chaotic whirlwind over here.

Back to Madonna & Me… At the end of March, my friend Marisa helped me plan (and throw) a fun launch party at SF’s Cat Club (including a reading with contributors Kelly Keenan Trumpbour and Marisela Huerta).  And at the beginning of April, I did a reading at L.A.’s famed Book Soup bookstore (again with my trusty contributors Kelly and Marisela). It was great. I was so excited to check out Book Soup — some of my favorite writers have read their work there, and I felt really proud and happy to join their ranks.

The book has been getting more press accolades. Hurrah! This NY1 news segment — from our March “Soundtrack Series” event in NYC — is probably my favorite.  This video clip is fun too — it features yours truly talking about, uh, my “very first time.” Yes, that kind of first time. Check out what BUST mag has to say about the book here. And look at the HelloGiggles review here.

I’m heading back to NYC in May for another reading at one of my favorite bookstores: St. Marks Bookshop on 5/23. I’ll be reading there with Susan Shapiro, Emily Nussbaum, Dana Rossi, and Colleen Kane. And on 5/25 I have another reading at Atomic Books in Baltimore (with Kelly Keenan Trumpbour and another reader TBD). Should be awesome.

Stay tuned! I will try to be better about posting in this thing; I know you’re all simply DYING for more bloggy goodness.
